The Slow Pacific Swell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDBBEEFFGH AAIIFFJJKKLLDD BBMMNNOOFFBBBB

Far out of sight forever stands the seaA
Bounding the land with pale tranquillityB
When a small child I watched it from a hillC
At thirty miles or more The vision stillC
Lies in the eye soft blue and far awayD
The rain has washed the dust from April dayD
Paint brush and lupine lie against the groundB
The wind above the hill top has the soundB
Of distant water in unbroken skyE
Dark and precise the little steamers plyE
Firm in direction they seem not to stirF
That is illusion The artificerF
Of quiet distance holds me in a viseG
And holds the ocean steady to my eyesH

Once when I rounded Flattery the seaA
Hove its loose weight like sand to tangle meA
Upon the washing deck to crush the hullI
Subsiding dragged flesh at the bone The skullI
Felt the retreating wash of dreaming hairF
Half drenched in dissolution I lay bareF
I scarcely pulled myself erect I cameJ
Back slowly slowly knew myself the sameJ
That was the ocean From the ship we sawK
Gray whales for miles the long sweep of the jawK
The blunt head plunging clean above the waveL
And one rose in a tent of sea and gaveL
A darkening shudder water fell awayD
The whale stood shining and then sank in sprayD
-
-
A landsman I The sea is but a soundB
I would be near it on a sandy moundB
And hear the steady rushing of the deepM
While I lay stinging in the sand with sleepM
I have lived inland long The land is numbN
It stands beneath the feet and one may comeN
Walking securely till the sea extendsO
Its limber margin and precision endsO
By night a chaos of commingling powerF
The whole Pacific hovers hour by hourF
The slow Pacific swell stirs on the sandB
Sleeping to sink away withdrawing landB
Heaving and wrinkled in the moon and blindB
Or gathers seaward ebbing out of mindB
