Reptilian green the wrinkled throatA
Green as a bough of yew the beardB
He bent his head and so I smoteB
Then for a thought my vision clearedB
-
The head dropped clean he rose and walkedB
He fixed his fingers in the hairC
The head was unabashed and talkedB
I understood what I must dareC
-
His flesh cut down arose and grewD
He bade me wait the season s roundB
And then when he had strength anewD
To meet him on his native groundB
-
The year declined and in his keepE
I passed in joy a thriving yuleF
And whether waking or in sleepE
I lived in riot like a foolF
-
He beat the woods to bring me meatB
His lady like a forest vineG
Grew in my arms the growth was sweetB
And yet what thoughtless force was mineG
-
By practice and conviction formedB
With ancient stubbornness ingrainedB
Although her body clung and swarmedB
My own identity remainedB
-
Her beauty lithe unholy pureH
Took shapes that I had never knownI
And had I once been insecureJ
Had grafted laurel in my boneI
-
And then since I had kept the trustB
Had loved the lady yet was trueD
The knight withheld his giant thrustB
And let me go with what I knewD
-
I left the green bark and the shadeB
Where growth was rapid thick and stillK
I found a road that men had madeB
And rested on a drying hillK
