By The Road To The Air Base Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG

The calloused grass lies hardA
Against the cracking plainB
Life is a grayish stainB
The salt marsh hems my yardA
-
Dry dikes rise hill on hillC
In sloughs of tidal slimeD
Shellfish deposit limeD
Wild seafowl creep at willC
-
The highway like a beachE
Turns whiter shadowy dryF
Loud pale against the skyF
The bombing planes hold speechE
-
Yet fruit grows on the treesG
Here scholars pause to speakH
Through gardens bare and GreekH
I hear my neighbor's beesG
