A loved one leavesA
like air from the lungsB
vapor amid the final dry snowflakesC
the black branches clicking and saggingD
with iceE
She can't be breathed back inF
A mere gesture I abrade my cheekG
on the rust scaled trunkH
of a drain pipeI
To no purpose I weepJ
She departsK
Friends departL
fellow sufferersM
peersN
as from the field of the youngO
we are led toward separate pensP
away from the once shared milkQ
In vain like an unweaned whelpJ
I whine for friends'R
they don't come backS
Hopes departL
such darling ladiesT
whom I use on such useless occasionsU
Only their petticoats stay in my handsV
hopes are meant to be held for a momentW
Certitude departsK
I remember I swore a sacred oathX
to break my stupid head against the wallY
or the wall with my stupid headZ
My head is scratched trueA2
but unbrokenB2
And what of the wallY
The bastard smirksC2
on its blankness they are blandly changingD
the postersM
the portraits of heroesD2
CertitudeE2
where are youA2
New YorkF2
your dark sky circles above meG2
like a hawkH2
America believe meG2
I'm finishedI2
I'm finishedI2
finishedI2
I am a shipJ
where all the cabins smell of doomJ2
and rats leap in terror from the clammy deckK2
Hey seagulls don't weepJ
Don't don't pity meG2
My lovely leggy guests abandon meG2
They take their places as prescribedL2
the first in the lifeboatM2
Farewell my mistressesN2
My apple cheeked cadets abandon meG2
They want to liveO2
Fair enoughP2
they are still youngO
Farewell ladsQ2
Row aheadZ
You are menR2
Now the inane rumble of the engine shuts downS2
Only talentW
like a drunken unshaven captainB2
stands somberly on the bridgeT2
The captain is the captainB2
But he too tears smearing his windburned skinF
he too abandons meG2
he tooA2
he tooA2
Hey lifeboats stand awayU2
A ship when it sinksV2
makes a malestrom around itW2
To be totally aloneX2
hurts worse than a knifeY2
but I won't suck anyone down with meG2
I forgive you allY
Robed in death's foamZ2
I bequeath it to you to demolish that bastardly wallY
My trumpet juts from the marble swirlsA3
comrades battle onB3
