Irony Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBC DEFG HIJK LMNO GGGG PQDR OSOT UVWX YAOZ R

The twentieth century has often fooled usA
We've been squeezed in by falsehood as by taxesB
The breath of life has denuded our ideasB
as quickly as it strips a dandelionC
-
As boys fall back on biting sarcasmD
so we rely for safe defenseE
on an irony not too suppressedF
not too naked eitherG
-
It has served as a wall or damH
to shield us against a flood of liesI
and hands have laughed as they applaudedJ
and feet sniggered as they marchedK
-
They could write about us and we've allowedL
them to make movies of this scribbled trashM
but we have reserved the rightN
to treat all this with quiet ironyO
-
In our contempt we felt superiorG
All this is so but probing deeperG
irony instead of acting as our saviorG
you have become our murdererG
-
We're cautious hypocritical in loveP
Our friendships are lukewarm not braveQ
and our present seems no different fromD
our past so cunningly disguisedR
-
Through life we scurry In historyO
like any Faust we've been prejudgedS
With Mephistophelian smile ironyO
like a shadow dogs our every stepT
-
In vain we try to dodge the shadowU
The paths in front behind are blockedV
Irony to you we've sold our soulW
receiving no Margaret in returnX
-
You have buried us aliveY
Bitter knowledge has made us powerlessA
and our weary irony ironicallyO
has turned against ourselvesZ
-
