BorisTrump6: Prayer also doesn't stop gun violence. Xun Zi would have known that too.

MichaelMjfm: The words on the seal read 致誠無它, which is my truncated proverbialization of a line from the 3rd ce. BCE late Warring States Confucian text the Xunzi 荀子, which reads in full: 致誠則無它事矣, forming the beginning of a compact argument explaining Xun Zi's idea of "誠".

MichaelMjfm: In the socio-political environment of Xun Zi's world, indeed as it has always been until the present day, lying liars and their lies formed a moral evil of the highest order and by necessity were a major concern in the problem-consciousness of any aspiring political philosopher.

MichaelMjfm: Xun Zi's argument can be divided into four sections, the latter three thereof actually can be viewed as being a single half of the argument, as well.

MichaelMjfm: There is a lot that I could say about this argument of 誠 by Xun Zi, as it has occupied my thoughts almost single-mindedly for many years already.

MichaelMjfm: But there's some significant problems with this view of the Xunzi simply copy-pasting Mencian texts. For one, as we all know, Xun Zi hates - really, really hates - Mencius.

MichaelMjfm: Mencius believes people are inherently good, a quality that they only need to recover. But Xun Zi believes that people by nature will not be up to any good, and that they can only excel by learning skills that are inventions of human ingenuity rather than inherent abilities.

MichaelMjfm: But for Xun Zi this does not make sense. We should not actually want to be who we are originally by ourselves. What if we are originally bad people? Spoiler: we're all horrible people.

MichaelMjfm: Xun Zi has good reasons to believe that human excellence (defined as the ability to establish sustainable social systems: the proper polity) has to be achieved through education, itself a product of innovation.

MichaelMjfm: So, to reiterate: excellence is something you have to practice. What you have to practice to for good politics is to do the right thing in a social way 仁義 - this is Confucian dogma, explained by Xun Zi as 群居和一: a group of people living together in single-minded harmony.

MichaelMjfm: This is what Xun Zi argues that ritual 禮 and music 樂 is capable of. Human civilization, over time, produces cultural forms that we will enjoy to engage in above all else. The monkeys would wish they could party like us.

MichaelMjfm: But, in my opinion, truthfulness - as in the fullness of truth - best translates how Xun Zi conceptualizes 誠.

MichaelMjfm: So, what Xun Zi really wants to say, I am convinced, is that you must perform a commitment to live truthfully: 致誠, and that entails that beyond the standards of this performance there is by necessity no room left for anything else, nor will you want to: 而無它事矣!

MichaelMjfm: Scholars have regrettably ignored the philosophical significance of these kind of performative concepts in Xun Zi’s thought, mostly treating them as mere rhetorical devices.

MichaelMjfm: This particular interpretation of Xun Zi's conception of 誠 only really starts to shine 明 once you connect it with the other strands that make up the web of his thought, and begin to notice the patterns of consciously crafted vocabulary that keeps recurring.

Suppose, my dear, that you were I
And by your side your sweetheart sate;
Suppose you noticed by and by
The distance 'twixt you were too great;
Now tell me, dear, what would you do?
I know-and so do you.

And when (so comfortably placed)
