The gallant Youth who may have gainedA
Or seeks a winsome MarrowB
Was but an Infant in the lapC
When first I looked on YarrowB
Once more by Newark's Castle gateD
Long left without a warderE
I stood looked listened and with TheeF
Great Minstrel of the BorderE
-
Grave thoughts ruled wide on that sweet dayG
Their dignity installingH
In gentle bosoms while sere leavesI
Were on the bough or fallingH
But breezes played and sunshine gleamedJ
The forest to emboldenK
Reddened the fiery hues and shotL
Transparence through the goldenK
-
For busy thoughts the Stream flowed onM
In foamy agitationK
And slept in many a crystal poolN
For quiet contemplationK
No public and no private careO
The freeborn mind enthrallingH
We made a day of happy hoursP
Our happy days recallingH
-
Brisk Youth appeared the Morn of youthQ
With freaks of graceful follyF
Life's temperate Noon her sober EveR
Her Night not melancholyF
Past present future all appearedS
In harmony unitedT
Like guests that meet and some from farU
By cordial love invitedT
-
And if as Yarrow through the woodsV
And down the meadow rangingH
Did meet us with unaltered faceW
Though we were changed and changingH
If then some natural shadows spreadX
Our inward prospect overE
The soul's deep valley was not slowB
Its brightness to recoverE
-
Eternal blessings on the MuseY
And her divine employmentZ
The blameless Muse who trains her SonsA2
For hope and calm enjoymentZ
Albeit sickness lingering yetB2
Has o'er their pillow broodedC2
And Care waylays their steps a SpriteD2
Not easily eludedC2
-
For thee O Scott compelled to changeE2
Green Eildon hill and CheviotF2
For warm Vesuvio's vine clad slopesG2
And leave thy Tweed and TiviotF2
For mild Sorrento's breezy wavesH2
May classic Fancy linkingH
With native Fancy her fresh aidF2
Preserve thy heart from sinkingH
-
Oh while they minister to theeF
Each vying with the otherE
May Health return to mellow AgeI2
With Strength her venturous brotherE
And Tiber and each brook and rillJ2
Renowned in song and storyF
With unimagined beauty shineK2
Nor lose one ray of gloryF
-
For Thou upon a hundred streamsL2
By tales of love and sorrowB
Of faithful love undaunted truthQ
Hast shed the power of YarrowB
And streams unknown hills yet unseenM2
Wherever they invite TheeF
At parent Nature's grateful callN2
With gladness must requite TheeF
-
A gracious welcome shall be thineK2
Such looks of love and honourB
As thy own Yarrow gave to meF
When first I gazed upon herB
Beheld what I had feared to seeF
Unwilling to surrenderB
Dreams treasured up from early daysO2
The holy and the tenderB
-
And what for this frail world were allN2
That mortals do or sufferB
Did no responsive harp no penP2
Memorial tribute offerB
Yea what were mighty Nature's selfQ2
Her features could they win usR2
Unhelped by the poetic voiceS2
That hourly speaks within usR2
-
Nor deem that localized RomanceT2
Plays false with our affectionsA2
Unsanctifies our tears made sportF2
For fanciful dejectionsA2
Ah no the visions of the pastF2
Sustain the heart in feelingH
Life as she is our changeful LifeU2
With friends and kindred dealingH
-
Bear witness Ye whose thoughts that dayF2
In Yarrow's groves were centredF2
Who through the silent portal archV2
Of mouldering Newark enteredF2
And clomb the winding stair that onceA2
Too timidly was mountedF2
By the last Minstrel not the lastF2
Ere he his Tale recountedF2
-
Flow on for ever Yarrow StreamW2
Fulfil thy pensive dutyF2
Well pleased that future Bards should chantF2
For simple hearts thy beautyF2
To dream light dear while yet unseenM2
Dear to the common sunshineK2
And dearer still as now I feelX2
To memory's shadowy moonshineK2
