INMATE of a mountain dwellingA
Thou hast clomb aloft and gazedB
From the watch towers of HelvellynC
Awed delighted and amazedB
-
Potent was the spell that bound theeD
Not unwilling to obeyE
For blue Ether's arms flung round theeD
Stilled the pantings of dismayE
-
Lo the dwindled woods and meadowsF
What a vast abyss is thereG
Lo the clouds the solemn shadowsF
And the glistenings heavenly fairG
-
And a record of commotionC
Which a thousand ridges yieldH
Ridge and gulf and distant oceanC
Gleaming like a silver shieldH
-
Maiden now take flight inheritI
Alps or Andes they are thineC
With the morning's roseate SpiritI
Sweep their length of snowy lineC
-
Or survey their bright dominionsF
In the gorgeous colours drestI
Flung from off the purple pinionsF
Evening spreads throughout the westI
-
Thine are all the coral fountainsF
Warbling in each sparry vaultI
Of the untrodden lunar mountainsF
Listen to their songs or haltI
-
To Niphates' top invitedI
Whither spiteful Satan steeredI
Or descend where the ark alightedI
When the green earth re appearedI
-
For the power of hills is on theeD
As was witnessed through thine eyeJ
Then when old Helvellyn won theeD
To confess their majestyD
