Three years she grew in sun and showerA
Then Nature said A lovelier flowerA
On earth was never sownB
This Child I to myself will takeC
She shall be mine and I will makeC
A Lady of my ownB
-
Myself will to my darling beD
Both law and impulse and with meD
The Girl in rock and plainE
In earth and heaven in glade and bowerA
Shall feel an overseeing powerA
To kindle or restrainE
-
She shall be sportive as the fawnF
That wild with glee across the lawnF
Or up the mountain springsG
And hers shall be the breathing balmH
And hers the silence and the calmH
Of mute insensate thingsG
-
The floating clouds their state shall lendI
To her for her the willow bendI
Nor shall she fail to seeD
Even in the motions of the StormJ
Grace that shall mould the Maiden's formJ
By silent sympathyD
-
The stars of midnight shall be dearK
To her and she shall lean her earL
In many a secret placeM
Where rivulets dance their wayward roundN
And beauty born of murmuring soundN
Shall pass into her faceM
-
And vital feelings of delightO
Shall rear her form to stately heightO
Her virgin bosom swellP
Such thoughts to Lucy I will giveQ
While she and I together liveR
Here in this happy dellP
-
Thus Nature spake The work was doneS
How soon my Lucy's race was runS
She died and left to meD
This heath this calm and quiet sceneT
The memory of what has beenU
And never more will beD
