The Solitary Reaper Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDDEE EFEFEEGG HIHIJJDK LMNMOOPP

Behold her single in the fieldA
Yon solitary Highland LassB
Reaping and singing by herselfC
Stop here or gently passB
Alone she cuts and binds the grainD
And sings a melancholy strainD
O listen for the Vale profoundE
Is overflowing with the soundE
-
No Nightingale did ever chauntE
More welcome notes to weary bandsF
Of travellers in some shady hauntE
Among Arabian sandsF
A voice so thrilling ne'er was heardE
In spring time from the Cuckoo birdE
Breaking the silence of the seasG
Among the farthest HebridesG
-
Will no one tell me what she singsH
Perhaps the plaintive numbers flowI
For old unhappy far off thingsH
And battles long agoI
Or is it some more humble layJ
Familiar matter of to dayJ
Some natural sorrow loss or painD
That has been and may be againK
-
Whate'er the theme the Maiden sangL
As if her song could have no endingM
I saw her singing at her workN
And o'er the sickle bendingM
I listened motionless and stillO
And as I mounted up the hillO
The music in my heart I boreP
Long after it was heard no moreP
