Or The Solitude Of BinnorieA
-
SEVEN Daughter had Lord ArchibaldB
All children of one motherA
You could not say in one short dayC
What love they bore each otherA
A garland of seven lilies wroughtD
Seven sisters that together dwellE
But he bold Knight as ever foughtD
Their Father took of them no thoughtD
He loved the wars so wellE
Sing mournfully oh mournfullyE
The solitude of BinnorieA
-
Fresh blows the wind a western windF
And from the shores of ErinG
Across the wave a Rover braveH
To Binnorie is steeringI
Right onward to the Scottish strandJ
The gallant ship is borneK
The warriors leap upon the landJ
And hark the Leader of the bandJ
Hath blown his bugle hornK
Sing mournfully oh mournfullyE
The solitude of BinnorieA
-
Beside a grotto of their ownL
With boughs above them closingI
The Seven are laid and in the shadeM
They lie like fawns reposingI
But now upstarting with affrightM
At noise of man and steedM
Away they fly to left to rightM
Of your fair household Father knightM
Methinks you take small heedM
Sing mournfully oh mournfullyE
The solitude of BinnorieA
-
Away the even fair Campbells flyE
And over hill and hollowE
With menace proud and insult loudM
The youthful Rovers followE
Cried they 'Your Father loves to roamN
Enough for him to findM
The empty house when he comes homeN
For us your yellow ringlets combN
For us be fair and kind '-
Sing mournfully oh mournfullyE
The solitude of BinnorieA
-
Some close behind some side to sideM
Like clouds in stormy weatherA
They run and cry 'Nay let us dieE
And let us die together '-
A lake was near the shore was steepO
There never foot had beenG
They ran and with a deperate leapO
Together plunged into the deepO
Nor ever more were seenP
Sing mournfully oh mournfullyE
The solitude of BinnorieA
-
The stream that flows out of the lakeI
As through the glen it ramblesQ
Repeats a moan o'er moss and stoneL
For those seven lovely CampbellsQ
Seven little Islands green and bareA
Have risen from out the deepO
The fishers say those sisters fairA
By faeries all are buried thereA
And there together sleepO
Sing mournfully oh mournfullyE
The solitude of BinnorieA
