A Pilgrim when the summer dayA
Had closed upon his weary wayA
A lodging begged beneath a castle's roofB
But him the haughty Warder spurnedC
And from the gate the Pilgrim turnedC
To seek such covert as the fieldD
Or heath besprinkled copse might yieldD
Or lofty wood shower proofB
-
He paced along and pensivelyE
Halting beneath a shady treeF
Whose moss grown root might serve for couch or seatG
Fixed on a Star his upward eyeH
Then from the tenant of the skyH
He turned and watched with kindred lookI
A Glow worm in a dusky nookI
Apparent at his feetG
-
The murmur of a neighbouring streamJ
Induced a soft and slumbrous dreamJ
A pregnant dream within whose shadowy boundsK
He recognised the earth born StarL
And 'That' which glittered from afarL
And strange to witness from the frameM
Of the ethereal Orb there cameM
Intelligible soundsK
-
Much did it taunt the humble LightN
That now when day was fled and nightN
Hushed the dark earth fast closing weary eyesO
A very reptile could presumeP
To show her taper in the gloomP
As if in rivalship with OneQ
Who sate a ruler on his throneR
Erected in the skiesO
-
Exalted Star the Worm repliedS
Abate this unbecoming prideS
Or with a less uneasy lustre shineT
Thou shrink'st as momently thy raysU
Are mastered by the breathing hazeU
While neither mist nor thickest cloudV
That shapes in heaven its murky shroudV
Hath power to injure mineT
-
But not for this do I aspireW
To match the spark of local fireX
That at my will burns on the dewy lawnY
With thy acknowledged glories NoZ
Yet thus upbraided I may showZ
What favours do attend me hereA2
Till like thyself I disappearB2
Before the purple dawnY
-
When this in modest guise was saidC2
Across the welkin seemed to spreadC2
A boding sound for aught but sleep unfitD2
Hills quaked the rivers backward ranE2
That Star so proud of late looked wanF2
And reeled with visionary stirX
In the blue depth like LuciferX
Cast headlong to the pitD2
-
Fire raged and when the spangled floorG2
Of ancient ether was no moreG2
New heavens succeeded by the dream brought forthH2
And all the happy Souls that rodeI2
Transfigured through that fresh abodeI2
Had heretofore in humble trustJ2
Shone meekly 'mid their native dustJ2
The Glow worms of the earthK2
-
This knowledge from an Angel's voiceL2
Proceeding made the heart rejoiceL2
Of Him who slept upon the open leaF
Waking at morn he murmured notM2
And till life's journey closed the spotM2
Was to the Pilgrim's soul endearedN2
Where by that dream he had been cheeredO2
Beneath the shady treeF
