Oh pleasant exercise of hope and joyA
For mighty were the auxiliars which then stoodB
Upon our side we who were strong in loveC
Bliss was it in that dawn to be aliveD
But to be young was very heaven Oh timesE
In which the meagre stale forbidding waysF
Of custom law and statute took at onceG
The attraction of a country in romanceH
When Reason seemed the most to assert her rightsI
When most intent on making of herselfJ
A prime Enchantress to assist the workK
Which then was going forward in her nameL
Not favoured spots alone but the whole earthM
The beauty wore of promise that which setsN
As at some moment might not be unfeltB
Among the bowers of paradise itselfJ
The budding rose above the rose full blownO
What temper at the prospect did not wakeP
To happiness unthought of The inertB
Were roused and lively natures rapt awayQ
They who had fed their childhood upon dreamsR
The playfellows of fancy who had madeB
All powers of swiftness subtilty and strengthS
Their ministers who in lordly wise had stirredB
Among the grandest objects of the senseT
And dealt with whatsoever they found thereU
As if they had within some lurking rightB
To wield it they too who of gentle moodB
Had watched all gentle motions and to theseV
Had fitted their own thoughts schemers more wildB
And in the region of their peaceful selvesW
Now was it that both found the meek and loftyB
Did both find helpers to their heart's desireX
And stuff at hand plastic as they could wishY
Wcre called upon to exercise their skillZ
Not in Utopia subterranean fieldsA2
Or some secreted island Heaven knows whereU
But in the very world which is the worldB
Of all of us the place where in the endB
We find our happiness or not at allB2
