HUMANITY delighting to beholdB
A fond reflection of her own decayC
Hath painted Winter like a traveller oldB
Propped on a staff and through the sullen dayC
In hooded mantle limping o'er the plainD
As though his weakness were disturbed by painD
Or if a juster fancy should allowE
An undisputed symbol of commandF
The chosen sceptre is a withered boughE
Infirmly grasped within a palsied handF
These emblems suit the helpless and forlornG
But mighty Winter the device shall scornG
-
For he it was dread Winter who besetH
Flinging round van and rear his ghastly netH
That host when from the regions of the PoleI
They shrunk insane ambition's barren goalI
That host as huge and strong as e'er defiedJ
Their God and placed their trust in human prideJ
As fathers persecute rebellious sonsK
He smote the blossoms of their warrior youthL
He called on Frost's inexorable toothL
Life to consume in Manhood's firmest holdB
Nor spared the reverend blood that feebly runsK
For why unless for liberty enrolledB
And sacred home ah why should hoary Age be boldB
-
Fleet the Tartar's reinless steedM
But fleeter far the pinions of the WindN
Which from Siberian caves the Monarch freedM
And sent him forth with squadrons of his kindN
And bade the Snow their ample backs bestrideN
And to the battle rideN
No pitying voice commands a haltN
No courage can repel the dire assaultN
Distracted spiritless benumbed and blindN
Whole legions sink and in one instant findN
Burial and death look for them and descryO
When morn returns beneath the clear blue skyP
A soundless waste a trackless vacancyQ
