What's in a 'Name'A
B
Brutus will start a Spirit as soon as CaesarC
-
PROLOGUED
-
There's something in a flying horseE
There's something in a huge balloonF
But through the clouds I'll never floatG
Until I have a little BoatG
Shaped like the crescent moonF
-
And now I 'have' a little BoatG
In shape a very crescent moonF
Fast through the clouds my boat can sailH
But if perchance your faith should failH
Look up and you shall see me soonF
-
The woods my Friends are round you roaringI
Rocking and roaring like a seaJ
The noise of danger's in your earsK
And ye have all a thousand fearsK
Both for my little Boat and meJ
-
Meanwhile untroubled I admireL
The pointed horns of my canoeM
And did not pity touch my breastN
To see how ye are all distrestN
Till my ribs ached I'd laugh at youM
-
Away we go my Boat and IO
Frail man ne'er sate in such anotherC
Whether among the winds we striveP
Or deep into the clouds we diveP
Each is contented with the otherC
-
Away we go and what care weJ
For treasons tumults and for warsQ
We are as calm in our delightN
As is the crescent moon so brightN
Among the scattered starsR
-
Up goes my Boat among the starsR
Through many a breathless field of lightN
Through many a long blue field of etherC
Leaving ten thousand stars beneath herC
Up goes my little Boat so brightN
-
The Crab the Scorpion and the BullS
We pry among them all have shotN
High o'er the red haired race of MarsR
Covered from top to toe with scarsR
Such company I like it notN
-
The towns in Saturn are decayedN
And melancholy Spectres throng themA
The Pleiads that appear to kissT
Each other in the vast abyssT
With joy I sail among themA
-
Swift Mercury resounds with mirthU
Great Jove is full of stately bowersV
But these and all that they containW
What are they to that tiny grainW
That little Earth of oursV
-
Then back to Earth the dear green EarthU
Whole ages if I here should roamA
The world for my remarks and meJ
Would not a whit the better beJ
I've left my heart at homeA
-
See there she is the matchless EarthU
There spreads the famed Pacific OceanX
Old Andes thrusts yon craggy spearY
Through the grey clouds the Alps are hereZ
Like waters in commotionX
-
Yon tawny slip is Libya's sandsA2
That silver thread the river DnieperZ
And look where clothed in brightest greenB2
Is a sweet Isle of isles the QueenB2
Ye fairies from all evil keep herZ
-
And see the town where I was bornC2
Around those happy fields we spanD2
In boyish gambols I was lostN
Where I have been but on this coastN
I feel I am a manD2
-
Never did fifty things at onceE2
Appear so lovely never neverZ
How tunefully the forests ringI
To hear the earth's soft murmuringI
Thus could I hang for everZ
-
Shame on you cried my little BoatN
Was ever such a homesick LoonF
Within a living Boat to sitN
And make no better use of itN
A Boat twin sister of the crescent moonF
-
Ne'er in the breast of full grown PoetN
Fluttered so faint a heart beforeZ
Was it the music of the spheresK
That overpowered your mortal earsK
Such din shall trouble them no moreZ
-
These nether precincts do not lackF2
Charms of their own then come with meJ
I want a comrade and for youM
There's nothing that I would not doM
Nought is there that you shall not seeJ
-
Haste and above Siberian snowsG2
We'll sport amid the boreal morningI
Will mingle with her lustres glidingI
Among the stars the stars now hidingI
And now the stars adorningI
-
I know the secrets of a landN
Where human foot did never strayZ
Fair is that land as evening skiesH2
And cool though in the depth it liesH2
Of burning AfricaI2
-
Or we'll into the realm of FaeryZ
Among the lovely shades of thingsJ2
The shadowy forms of mountains bareZ
And streams and bowers and ladies fairZ
The shades of palaces and kingsJ2
-
Or if you thirst with hardy zealK2
Less quiet regions to exploreZ
Prompt voyage shall to you revealK2
How earth and heaven are taught to feelK2
The might of magic loreZ
-
My little vagrant Form of lightN
My gay and beautiful CanoeM
Well have you played your friendly partN
As kindly take what from my heartN
Experience forces then adieuM
-
Temptation lurks among your wordsL2
But while these pleasures you're pursuingI
Without impediment or letN
No wonder if you quite forgetN
What on the earth is doingI
-
There was a time when all mankindN
Did listen with a faith sincereZ
To tuneful tongues in mystery versedN
'Then' Poets fearlessly rehearsedN
The wonders of a wild careerZ
-
Go but the world's a sleepy worldN
And 'tis I fear an age too lateN
Take with you some ambitious YouthM2
For restless Wanderer I in truthM2
Am all unfit to be your mateN
-
Long have I loved what I beholdN
The night that calms the day that cheersK
The common growth of mother earthU
Suffices me her tears her mirthU
Her humblest mirth and tearsN2
-
The dragon's wing the magic ringI
I shall not covet for my dowerZ
If I along that lowly wayZ
With sympathetic heart may strayZ
And with a soul of powerZ
-
These given what more need I desireZ
To stir to soothe or elevateN
What nobler marvels than the mindN
May in life's daily prospect findN
May find or there createN
-
A potent wand doth Sorrow wieldN
What spell so strong as guilty FearZ
Repentance is a tender SpriteN
If aught on earth have heavenly mightN
'Tis lodged within her silent tearZ
-
But grant my wishes let us nowO2
Descend from this ethereal heightN
Then take thy way adventurous SkiffP2
More daring far than HippogriffP2
And be thy own delightN
-
To the stone table in my gardenX
Loved haunt of many a summer hourZ
The Squire is come his daughter BessQ2
Beside him in the cool recessQ2
Sits blooming like a flowerZ
-
With these are many more convenedN
They know not I have been so farZ
I see them there in number nineR2
Beneath the spreading Weymouth pineR2
I see them there they areZ
-
There sits the Vicar and his DameA
And there my good friend Stephen OtterZ
And ere the light of evening failH
To them I must relate the TaleH
Of Peter Bell the PotterZ
-
Off flew the Boat away she fleesS2
Spurning her freight with indignationX
And I as well as I was ableT2
On two poor legs toward my stone tableT2
Limped on with sore vexationX
-
O here he is cried little BessQ2
She saw me at the garden doorZ
We've waited anxiously and longU2
They cried and all around me throngU2
Full nine of them or moreZ
-
Reproach me not your fears be stillV2
Be thankful we again have metN
Resume my Friends within the shadeN
Your seats and quickly shall be paidN
The well remembered debtN
-
I spake with faltering voice like oneX
Not wholly rescued from the paleH
Of a wild dream or worse illusionX
But straight to cover my confusionX
Began the promised TaleH
