PROLOGUEA
-
There's something in a flying horseB
There's something in a huge balloonC
But through the clouds I'll never floatD
Until I have a little BoatD
Shaped like the crescent moonC
-
And now I 'have' a little BoatD
In shape a very crescent moonC
Fast through the clouds my boat can sailE
But if perchance your faith should failE
Look up and you shall see me soonC
-
The woods my Friends are round you roaringF
Rocking and roaring like a seaG
The noise of danger's in your earsH
And ye have all a thousand fearsH
Both for my little Boat and meG
-
Meanwhile untroubled I admireI
The pointed horns of my canoeJ
And did not pity touch my breastK
To see how ye are all distrestK
Till my ribs ached I'd laugh at youJ
-
Away we go my Boat and IL
Frail man ne'er sate in such anotherM
Whether among the winds we striveN
Or deep into the clouds we diveN
Each is contented with the otherM
-
Away we go and what care weG
For treasons tumults and for warsO
We are as calm in our delightK
As is the crescent moon so brightK
Among the scattered starsP
-
Up goes my Boat among the starsP
Through many a breathless field of lightK
Through many a long blue field of etherM
Leaving ten thousand stars beneath herM
Up goes my little Boat so brightK
-
The Crab the Scorpion and the BullQ
We pry among them all have shotK
High o'er the red haired race of MarsP
Covered from top to toe with scarsP
Such company I like it notK
-
The towns in Saturn are decayedK
And melancholy Spectres throng themR
The Pleiads that appear to kissS
Each other in the vast abyssS
With joy I sail among themR
-
Swift Mercury resounds with mirthT
Great Jove is full of stately bowersU
But these and all that they containV
What are they to that tiny grainV
That little Earth of oursU
-
Then back to Earth the dear green EarthT
Whole ages if I here should roamW
The world for my remarks and meG
Would not a whit the better beG
I've left my heart at homeW
-
See there she is the matchless EarthT
There spreads the famed Pacific OceanX
Old Andes thrusts yon craggy spearY
Through the grey clouds the Alps are hereZ
Like waters in commotionX
-
Yon tawny slip is Libya's sandsA2
That silver thread the river DnieperZ
And look where clothed in brightest greenB2
Is a sweet Isle of isles the QueenB2
Ye fairies from all evil keep herZ
-
And see the town where I was bornC2
Around those happy fields we spanD2
In boyish gambols I was lostK
Where I have been but on this coastK
I feel I am a manD2
-
Never did fifty things at onceE2
Appear so lovely never neverZ
How tunefully the forests ringF
To hear the earth's soft murmuringF
Thus could I hang for everZ
-
Shame on you cried my little BoatK
Was ever such a homesick LoonC
Within a living Boat to sitK
And make no better use of itK
A Boat twin sister of the crescent moonC
-
Ne'er in the breast of full grown PoetK
Fluttered so faint a heart beforeZ
Was it the music of the spheresH
That overpowered your mortal earsH
Such din shall trouble them no moreZ
-
These nether precincts do not lackF2
Charms of their own then come with meG
I want a comrade and for youJ
There's nothing that I would not doJ
Nought is there that you shall not seeG
-
Haste and above Siberian snowsG2
We'll sport amid the boreal morningF
Will mingle with her lustres glidingF
Among the stars the stars now hidingF
And now the stars adorningF
-
I know the secrets of a landK
Where human foot did never strayZ
Fair is that land as evening skiesH2
And cool though in the depth it liesH2
Of burning AfricaI2
-
Or we'll into the realm of FaeryZ
Among the lovely shades of thingsJ2
The shadowy forms of mountains bareZ
And streams and bowers and ladies fairZ
The shades of palaces and kingsJ2
-
Or if you thirst with hardy zealK2
Less quiet regions to exploreZ
Prompt voyage shall to you revealK2
How earth and heaven are taught to feelK2
The might of magic loreZ
-
My little vagrant Form of lightK
My gay and beautiful CanoeJ
Well have you played your friendly partK
As kindly take what from my heartK
Experience forces then adieuJ
-
Temptation lurks among your wordsL2
But while these pleasures you're pursuingF
Without impediment or letK
No wonder if you quite forgetK
What on the earth is doingF
-
There was a time when all mankindK
Did listen with a faith sincereZ
To tuneful tongues in mystery versedK
'Then' Poets fearlessly rehearsedK
The wonders of a wild careerZ
-
Go but the world's a sleepy worldK
And 'tis I fear an age too lateK
Take with you some ambitious YouthM2
For restless Wanderer I in truthM2
Am all unfit to be your mateK
-
Long have I loved what I beholdK
The night that calms the day that cheersH
The common growth of mother earthT
Suffices me her tears her mirthT
Her humblest mirth and tearsN2
-
The dragon's wing the magic ringF
I shall not covet for my dowerZ
If I along that lowly wayZ
With sympathetic heart may strayZ
And with a soul of powerZ
-
These given what more need I desireZ
To stir to soothe or elevateK
What nobler marvels than the mindK
May in life's daily prospect findK
May find or there createK
-
A potent wand doth Sorrow wieldK
What spell so strong as guilty FearZ
Repentance is a tender SpriteK
If aught on earth have heavenly mightK
'Tis lodged within her silent tearZ
-
But grant my wishes let us nowO2
Descend from this ethereal heightK
Then take thy way adventurous SkiffP2
More daring far than HippogriffP2
And be thy own delightK
-
To the stone table in my gardenX
Loved haunt of many a summer hourZ
The Squire is come his daughter BessQ2
Beside him in the cool recessQ2
Sits blooming like a flowerZ
-
With these are many more convenedK
They know not I have been so farZ
I see them there in number nineR2
Beneath the spreading Weymouth pineR2
I see them there they areZ
-
There sits the Vicar and his DameS2
And there my good friend Stephen OtterZ
And ere the light of evening failE
To them I must relate the TaleE
Of Peter Bell the PotterZ
-
Off flew the Boat away she fleesT2
Spurning her freight with indignationX
And I as well as I was ableU2
On two poor legs toward my stone tableU2
Limped on with sore vexationX
-
O here he is cried little BessQ2
She saw me at the garden doorZ
We've waited anxiously and longV2
They cried and all around me throngV2
Full nine of them or moreZ
-
Reproach me not your fears be stillW2
Be thankful we again have metK
Resume my Friends within the shadeK
Your seats and quickly shall be paidK
The well remembered debtK
-
I spake with faltering voice like oneX
Not wholly rescued from the paleE
Of a wild dream or worse illusionX
But straight to cover my confusionX
Began the promised TaleE
-
PART FIRSTK
-
ALL by the moonlight river sideK
Groaned the poor Beast alas in vainX
The staff was raised to loftier heightK
And the blows fell with heavier weightK
As Peter struck and struck againX
-
Hold cried the Squire against the rulesX2
Of common sense you're surely sinningF
This leap is for us all too boldK
Who Peter was let that be toldK
And start from the beginningF
-
A Potter Sir he was by tradeK
Said I becoming quite collectedK
And wheresoever he appearedK
Full twenty times was Peter fearedK
For once that Peter was respectedK
-
He two and thirty years or moreZ
Had been a wild and woodland roverZ
Had heard the Atlantic surges roarZ
On farthest Cornwall's rocky shoreZ
And trod the cliffs of DoverZ
-
And he had seen Caernarvon's towersU
And well he knew the spire of SarumY2
And he had been where Lincoln bellZ2
Flings o'er the fen that ponderous knellZ2
A far renowned alarumY2
-
At Doncaster at York and LeedsA3
And merry Carlisle hadK
