While from the purpling east departsA
The star that led the dawnB
Blithe Flora from her couch upstartsA
For May is on the lawnB
A quickening hope a freshening gleeC
Foreran the expected PowerD
Whose first drawn breath from bush and treeC
Shakes off that pearly showerD
-
All Nature welcomes Her whose swayE
Tempers the year's extremesF
Who scattereth lustres o'er noon dayE
Like morning's dewy gleamsF
While mellow warble sprightly trillG
The tremulous heart exciteH
And hums the balmy air to stillG
The balance of delightH
-
Time was blest Power when youth and maidsI
At peep of dawn would riseJ
And wander forth in forest gladesI
Thy birth to solemnizeI
Though mute the song to grace the riteH
Untouched the hawthorn boughK
Thy Spirit triumphs o'er the slightH
Man changes but not ThouK
-
Thy feathered Lieges bill and wingsI
In love's disport employL
Warmed by thy influence creeping thingsI
Awake to silent joyL
Queen art thou still for each gay plantM
Where the slim wild deer rovesI
And served in depths where fishes hauntN
Their own mysterious grovesI
-
Cloud piercing peak and trackless heathO
Instinctive homage payE
Nor wants the dim lit cave a wreathO
To honor thee sweet MayE
Where cities fanned by thy brisk airsI
Behold a smokeless skyP
Their puniest flower pot nursling daresI
To open a bright eyeP
-
And if on this thy natal mornQ
The pole from which thy nameR
Hath not departed stands forlornQ
Of song and dance and gameR
Still from the village green a vowK
Aspires to thee addrestN
Wherever peace is on the browK
Or love within the breastN
-
Yes where Love nestles thou canst teachS
The soul to love the moreT
Hearts also shall thy lessons reachS
That never loved beforeT
Stript is the haughty one of prideN
The bashful freed from fearU
While rising like the ocean tideN
In flow the joyous yearU
-
Hush feeble lyre weak words refuseI
The service to prolongV
To yon exulting thrush the MuseI
Entrusts the imperfect songV
His voice shall chant in accents clearU
Throughout the live long dayN
Till the first silver star appearU
The sovereignty of MayN
