Near Dover, September 1802 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAACCADEDDED

Inland within a hollow vale I stoodA
And saw while sea was calm and air was clearB
The coast of France the coast of France how nearB
Drawn almost into frightful neighbourhoodA
I shrunk for verily the barrier floodA
Was like a lake or river bright and fairC
A span of waters yet what power is thereC
What mightiness for evil and for goodA
Even so doth God protect us if we beD
Virtuous and wise Winds blow and waters rollE
Strength to the brave and Power and DeityD
Yet in themselves are nothing One decreeD
Spake laws to 'them' and said that by the soulE
Only the Nations shall be great and freeD
