Monument Of Mrs. Howard - By Nollekens - In Wetheral Church, Near Corby, On The Banks Of The Eden Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAACCADEDEDF

Stretched on the dying Mother's lap lies deadA
Her new born Babe dire ending of bright hopeB
But Sculpture here with the divinest scopeB
Of luminous faith heavenward hath raised that headA
So patiently and through one hand has spreadA
A touch so tender for the insensate ChildC
Earth's lingering love to parting reconciledC
Brief parting for the spirit is all but fledA
That we who contemplate the turns of lifeD
Through this still medium are consoled and cheeredE
Feel with the Mother think the severed WifeD
Is less to be lamented than reveredE
And own that Art triumphant over strifeD
And pain hath powers to Eternity endearedF

Christopher Houghton: I recently visited the curch at Wetheral. It is a beautiful building in itself. The sculpture is also beautiful & moving. I took a photograph, but it is protected by a glass & iron protective barrier in a side chapel. The sonnet is referenced in a pamphlet. It took some searching on google to locate the poem. Well worth a visit.
