Miscellaneous Sonnets, 1842 - Vi - Concluded Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBABCDBCD

Long favoured England be not thou misledA
By monstrous theories of alien growthB
Lest alien frenzy seize thee waxing wrothB
Self smitten till thy garments reek dyed redA
With thy own blood which tears in torrents shedA
Fail to wash out tears flowing ere thy trothB
Be plighted not to ease but sullen slothB
Or wan despair the ghost of false hope fledA
Into a shameful grave Among thy youthB
My Country if such warning be held dearC
Then shall a Veteran's heart be thrilled with joyD
One who would gather from eternal truthB
For time and season rules that work to cheerC
Not scourge to save the People not destroyD
