Memory Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED BBBB BFBG HIHI JKJK LMLLM

A pen to register a keyA
That winds through secret wardsB
Are well assigned to MemoryA
By allegoric BardsB
-
As aptly also might be givenC
A Pencil to her handD
That softening objects sometimes evenE
Outstrips the heart's demandD
-
That smooths foregone distress the linesB
Of lingering care subduesB
Long vanished happiness refinesB
And clothes in brighter huesB
-
Yet like a tool of Fancy worksB
Those Spectres to dilateF
That startle Conscience as she lurksB
Within her lonely seatG
-
Oh that our lives which flee so fastH
In purity were suchI
That not an image of the pastH
Should fear that pencil's touchI
-
Retirement then might hourly lookJ
Upon a soothing sceneK
Age steal to his allotted nookJ
Contented and sereneK
-
With heart as calm as lakes that sleepL
In frosty moonlight glisteningM
Or mountain rivers where they creepL
Along a channel smooth and deepL
To their own far off murmurs listeningM
