From Stirling castle we had seenA
The mazy Forth unravelledB
Had trod the banks of Clyde and TayB
And with the Tweed had travelledB
And when we came to ClovenfordB
Then said my winsome MarrowC
Whate'er betide we'll turn asideB
And see the Braes of YarrowC
-
Let Yarrow folk 'frae' Selkirk townD
Who have been buying sellingE
Go back to Yarrow 'tis their ownF
Each maiden to her dwellingE
On Yarrow's banks let herons feedB
Hares couch and rabbits burrowC
But we will downward with the TweedB
Nor turn aside to YarrowC
-
There's Galla Water Leader HaughsG
Both lying right before usG
And Dryborough where with chiming TweedB
The lintwhites sing in chorusG
There's pleasant Tiviot dale a landB
Made blithe with plough and harrowC
Why throw away a needful dayB
To go in search of YarrowC
-
What's Yarrow but a river bareH
That glides the dark hills underI
There are a thousand such elsewhereH
As worthy of your wonderI
Strange words they seemed of slight and scornJ
My True love sighed for sorrowC
And looked me in the face to thinkK
I thus could speak of YarrowC
-
Oh green said I are Yarrow's holmsG
And sweet is Yarrow flowingE
Fair hangs the apple frae the rockL
But we will leave it growingE
O'er hilly path and open StrathM
We'll wander Scotland thoroughC
But though so near we will not turnN
Into the dale of YarrowC
-
Let beeves and home bred kine partakeO
The sweets of Burn mill meadowC
The swan on still St Mary's LakeO
Float double swan and shadowC
We will not see them will not goC
To day nor yet to morrowC
Enough if in our hearts we knowC
There's such a place as YarrowC
-
Be Yarrow stream unseen unknownF
It must or we shall rue itB
We have a vision of our ownF
Ah why should we undo itB
The treasured dreams of times long pastB
We'll keep them winsome MarrowC
For when we're there although 'tis fairH
'Twill be another YarrowC
-
If Care with freezing years should comeP
And wandering seem but follyQ
Should we be loth to stir from homeR
And yet be melancholyQ
Should life be dull and spirits lowC
'Twill soothe us in our sorrowC
That earth has something yet to showC
The bonny holms of YarrowC
