Memorials Of A Tour In Scotland, 1803 I. Departure From The Vale Of Grasmere, August 1803 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEEFFGGHHHHIIJJ KKHHLMHHHHNO

The gentlest Shade that walked Elysian plainsA
Might sometimes covet dissoluble chainsA
Even for the tenants of the zone that liesB
Beyond the stars celestial ParadiseC
Methinks 'twould heighten joy to overleapD
At will the crystal battlements and peepD
Into some other region though less fairE
To see how things are made and managed thereE
Change for the worse might please incursion boldF
Into the tracts of darkness and of coldF
O'er Limbo lake with aery flight to steerG
And on the verge of Chaos hang in fearG
Such animation often do I findH
Power in my breast wings growing in my mindH
Then when some rock or hill is overpastH
Perhance without one look behind me castH
Some barrier with which Nature from the birthI
Of things has fenced this fairest spot on earthI
O pleasant transit Grasmere to resignJ
Such happy fields abodes so calm as thineJ
Not like an outcast with himself at strifeK
The slave of business time or care for lifeK
But moved by choice or if constrained in partH
Yet still with Nature's freedom at the heartH
To cull contentment upon wildest shoresL
And luxuries extract from bleakest moorsM
With prompt embrace all beauty to enfoldH
And having rights in all that we beholdH
Then why these lingering steps A bright adieuH
For a brief absence proves that love is trueH
Ne'er can the way be irksome or forlornN
That winds into itself for sweet returnO
