'REST rest perturbed EarthB
O rest thou doleful Mother of Mankind '-
A Spirit sang in tones more plaintive than the windC
'From regions where no evil thing has birthB
I come thy stains to wash awayD
Thy cherished fetters to unbindC
And open thy sad eyes upon a milder dayC
The Heavens are thronged with martyrs that have risenE
From out thy noisome prisonE
The penal caverns groanF
With tens of thousands rent from off the treeG
Of hopeful life by battle's whirlwind blownF
Into the deserts of EternityG
Unpitied havoc Victims unlamentedG
But not on high where madness is resentedG
And murder causes some sad tears to flowH
Though from the widely sweeping blowH
The choirs of Angels spread triumphantly augmentedG

-
'False Parent of MankindG
Obdurate proud and blindG
I sprinkle thee with soft celestial dewsI
Thy lost maternal heart to re infuseI
Scattering this far fetched moisture from my wingsJ
Upon the act a blessing I imploreK
Of which the rivers in their secret springsJ
The rivers stained so oft with human goreK
Are conscious may the like return no moreK
May Discord for a Seraph's careL
Shall be attended with a bolder prayerL
May she who once disturbed the seats of blissM
These mortal spheres aboveN
Be chained for ever to the black abyssM
And thou O rescued Earth by peace and loveN
And merciful desires thy sanctity approve '-
The Spirit ended his mysterious riteG
And the pure vision closed in darkness infiniteG
