Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOOPKOO QOROOOK

If thou in the dear love of some one FriendA
Hast been so happy that thou know'st what thoughtsB
Will sometimes in the happiness of loveC
Make the heart sink then wilt thou reverenceD
This quiet spot and Stranger not unmovedE
Wilt thou behold this shapeless heap of stonesF
The desolate ruins of St Herbert's CellG
Here stood his threshold here was spread the roofH
That sheltered him a self secluded ManI
After long exercise in social caresJ
And offices humane intent to adoreK
The Deity with undistracted mindL
And meditate on everlasting thingsM
In utter solitude But he had leftN
A Fellow labourer whom the good Man lovedO
As his own soul And when with eye upraisedO
To heaven he knelt before the crucifixP
While o'er the lake the cataract of LodoreK
Pealed to his orisons and when he pacedO
Along the beach of this small isle and thoughtO
Of his Companion he would pray that bothQ
Now that their earthly duties were fulfilledO
Might die in the same moment Nor in vainR
So prayed he as our chronicles reportO
Though here the Hermit numbered his last dayO
Far from St Cuthbert his beloved FriendO
Those holy Men both died in the same hourK
