WHO weeps for strangers Many weptA
For George and Sarah GreenB
Wept for that pair's unhappy fateC
Whose grave may here be seenB
-
By night upon these stormy fellsD
Did wife and husband roamE
Six little ones at home had leftF
And could not find that homeE
-
For 'any' dwelling place of manG
As vainly did they seekH
He perish'd and a voice was heardI
The widow's lonely shriekH
-
Not many steps and she was leftF
A body without lifeJ
A few short steps were the chain that boundK
The husband to the wifeJ
-
Now do those sternly featured hillsL
Look gently on this graveM
And quiet now are the depths of airN
As a sea without a waveM
-
But deeper lies the heart of peaceO
In quiet more profoundK
The heart of quietness is hereP
Within this churchyard boundK
-
And from all agony of mindQ
It keeps them safe and farR
From fear and grief and from all needS
Of sun or guiding starR
-
O darkness of the grave how deepT
After that living nightU
That last and dreary living oneV
Of sorrow and affrightU
-
O sacred marriage bed of deathW
That keeps them side by sideU
In bond of peace in bond of loveX
That may not be untiedU
