Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST UVRWXYZA2| Hign bliss is only for a higher state | A |
| But surely if severe afflictions borne | B |
| With patience merit the reward of peace | C |
| Peace ye deserve and may the solid good | D |
| Sought by a wise though late exchange and here | E |
| With bounteous hand beneath a cottage roof | F |
| To you accorded never be withdrawn | G |
| Nor for the world's best promises renounced | H |
| Most soothing was it for a welcome Friend | I |
| Fresh from the crowded city to behold | J |
| That lonely union privacy so deep | K |
| Such calm employments such entire content | L |
| So when the rain is over the storm laid | M |
| A pair of herons oft times have I seen | N |
| Upon a rocky islet side by side | O |
| Drying their feathers in the sun at ease | P |
| And so when night with grateful gloom had fallen | Q |
| Two glow worms in such nearness that they shared | R |
| As seemed their soft self satisfying light | S |
| Each with the other on the dewy ground | T |
| Where He that made them blesses their repose | U |
| When wandering among lakes and hills I note | V |
| Once more those creatures thus by nature paired | R |
| And guarded in their tranquil state of life | W |
| Even as your happy presence to my mind | X |
| Their union brought will they repay the debt | Y |
| And send a thankful spirit back to you | Z |
| With hope that we dear Friends shall meet again | A2 |
