Ecclesiastical Sonnets - Part Ii. - Xvi - Wars Of York And Lancaster Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAACCADEFEFD

Thus is the storm abated by the craftA
Of a shrewd Counselor eager to protectB
The Church whose power hath recently been checkedB
Whose monstrous riches threatened So the shaftA
Of victory mounts high and blood is quaffedA
In fields that rival Cressy and PoictiersC
Pride to be washed away by bitter tearsC
For deep as Hell itself the avenging draughtA
Of civil slaughter Yet while temporal powerD
Is by these shocks exhausted spiritual truthE
Maintains the else endangered gift of lifeF
Proceeds from infancy to lusty youthE
And under cover of this woeful strifeF
Gathers unblighted strength from hour to hourD
