Ecclesiastical Sonnets - Part I. - Xxxi - The Norman Conquest Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBACDDCEE

The woman hearted Confessor preparesA
The evanescence of the Saxon lineB
Hark 'tis the tolling Curfew the stars shineB
But of the lights that cherish household caresA
And festive gladness burns not one that daresA
To twinkle after that dull stroke of thineB
Emblem and instrument from Thames to TyneB
Of force that daunts and cunning that ensnaresA
Yet as the terrors of the lordly bellC
That quench from hut to palace lamps and firesD
Touch not the tapers of the sacred quiresD
Even so a thraldom studious to expelC
Old laws and ancient customs to derangeE
To Creed or Ritual brings no fatal changeE
