Ecclesiastical Sonnets - Part I. - Xxvi - Alfred Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBACDEFFD

Behold a pupil of the monkish gownA
The pious Alfred King to Justice dearB
Lord of the harp and liberating spearB
Mirror of Princes Indigent RenownA
Might range the starry ether for a crownA
Equal to 'his' deserts who like the yearB
Pours forth his bounty like the day doth cheerB
And awes like night with mercy tempered frownA
Ease from this noble miser of his timeC
No moment steals pain narrows not his caresD
Though small his kingdom as a spark or gemE
Of Alfred boasts remote JerusalemF
And Christian India through her widespread climeF
In sacred converse gifts with Alfred sharesD
