Calais, August 15, 1802 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBACDDECE

FESTIVALS have I seen that were not namesA
This is young Buonaparte's natal dayB
And his is henceforth an established swayB
Consul for life With worship France proclaimsA
Her approbation and with pomps and gamesA
Heaven grant that other Cities may be gayB
Calais is not and I have bent my wayB
To the sea coast noting that each man framesA
His business as he likes Far other showC
My youth here witnessed in a prouder timeD
The senselessness of joy was then sublimeD
Happy is he who caring not for PopeE
Consul or King can sound himself to knowC
The destiny of Man and live in hopeE
