Genius of Raphael if thy wingsA
Might bear thee to this glenB
With faithful memory left of thingsA
To pencil dear and penB
Thou would'st forego the neighbouring RhineC
And all his majestyD
A studious forehead to inclineC
O'er this poor familyD
-
The Mother her thou must have seenE
In spirit ere she cameF
To dwell these rifted rocks betweenE
Or found on earth a nameF
An image too of that sweet BoyG
Thy inspirations giveH
Of playfulness and love and joyG
Predestined here to liveI
-
Downcast or shooting glances farJ
How beautiful his eyesK
That blend the nature of the starJ
With that of summer skiesK
I speak as if of sense beguiledL
Uncounted months are goneM
Yet am I with the Jewish ChildL
That exquisite Saint JohnN
-
I see the dark brown curls the browO
The smooth transparent skinP
Refined as with intent to showQ
The holiness withinP
The grace of parting InfancyD
By blushes yet untamedL
Age faithful to the mother's kneeD
Nor of her arms ashamedL
-
Two lovely Sisters still and sweetL
As flowers stand side by sideL
Their soul subduing looks might cheatL
The Christian of his prideL
Such beauty hath the Eternal pouredL
Upon them not forlornR
Though of a lineage once abhorredL
Nor yet redeemed from scornR
-
Mysterious safeguard that in spiteL
Of poverty and wrongS
Doth here preserve a living lightL
From Hebrew fountains sprungT
That gives this ragged group to castL
Around the dell a gleamU
Of Palestine of glory pastL
And proud JerusalemV
