Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRQS TUVWXYZA2B2C2WD2PE2F 2G2H2I2J2QK2L2M2N2O2 P2PQ2HR2S2T2If aught of oaten stop or pastoral song | A |
May hope chaste Eve to soothe thy modest ear | B |
Like thy own solemn springs | C |
Thy springs and dying gales | D |
O nymph reserv'd while now the bright hair'd sun | E |
Sits in yon western tent whose cloudy skirts | F |
With brede ethereal wove | G |
O'erhang his wavy bed | H |
Now air is hush'd save where the weak ey'd bat | I |
With short shrill shriek flits by on leathern wing | J |
Or where the beetle winds | K |
His small but sullen horn | L |
As oft he rises 'midst the twilight path | M |
Against the pilgrim borne in heedless hum | N |
Now teach me maid compos'd | O |
To breathe some soften'd strain | P |
Whose numbers stealing thro' thy dark'ning vale | Q |
May not unseemly with its stillness suit | R |
As musing slow I hail | Q |
Thy genial lov'd return | S |
For when thy folding star arising shows | T |
His paly circlet at his warning lamp | U |
The fragrant Hours and elves | V |
Who slept in flow'rs the day | W |
And many a nymph who wreathes her brows with sedge | X |
And sheds the fresh'ning dew and lovelier still | Y |
The pensive Pleasures sweet | Z |
Prepare thy shadowy car | A2 |
Then lead calm vot'ress where some sheety lake | B2 |
Cheers the lone heath or some time hallow'd pile | C2 |
Or upland fallows grey | W |
Reflect its last cool gleam | D2 |
But when chill blust'ring winds or driving rain | P |
Forbid my willing feet be mine the hut | E2 |
That from the mountain's side | F2 |
Views wilds and swelling floods | G2 |
And hamlets brown and dim discover'd spires | H2 |
And hears their simple bell and marks o'er all | I2 |
Thy dewy fingers draw | J2 |
The gradual dusky veil | Q |
While Spring shall pour his show'rs as oft he wont | K2 |
And bathe thy breathing tresses meekest Eve | L2 |
While Summer loves to sport | M2 |
Beneath thy ling'ring light | N2 |
While sallow Autumn fills thy lap with leaves | O2 |
Or Winter yelling thro' the troublous air | P2 |
Affrights thy shrinking train | P |
And rudely rends thy robes | Q2 |
So long sure found beneath the sylvan shed | H |
Shall Fancy Friendship Science rose lipp'd Health | R2 |
Thy gentlest influence own | S2 |
And hymn thy fav'rite name | T2 |
