If aught of oaten stop or pastoral songA
May hope chaste Eve to soothe thy modest earB
Like thy own solemn springsC
Thy springs and dying galesD
O nymph reserv'd while now the bright hair'd sunE
Sits in yon western tent whose cloudy skirtsF
With brede ethereal woveG
O'erhang his wavy bedH
Now air is hush'd save where the weak ey'd batI
With short shrill shriek flits by on leathern wingJ
Or where the beetle windsK
His small but sullen hornL
As oft he rises 'midst the twilight pathM
Against the pilgrim borne in heedless humN
Now teach me maid compos'dO
To breathe some soften'd strainP
Whose numbers stealing thro' thy dark'ning valeQ
May not unseemly with its stillness suitR
As musing slow I hailQ
Thy genial lov'd returnS
For when thy folding star arising showsT
His paly circlet at his warning lampU
The fragrant Hours and elvesV
Who slept in flow'rs the dayW
And many a nymph who wreathes her brows with sedgeX
And sheds the fresh'ning dew and lovelier stillY
The pensive Pleasures sweetZ
Prepare thy shadowy carA2
Then lead calm vot'ress where some sheety lakeB2
Cheers the lone heath or some time hallow'd pileC2
Or upland fallows greyW
Reflect its last cool gleamD2
But when chill blust'ring winds or driving rainP
Forbid my willing feet be mine the hutE2
That from the mountain's sideF2
Views wilds and swelling floodsG2
And hamlets brown and dim discover'd spiresH2
And hears their simple bell and marks o'er allI2
Thy dewy fingers drawJ2
The gradual dusky veilQ
While Spring shall pour his show'rs as oft he wontK2
And bathe thy breathing tresses meekest EveL2
While Summer loves to sportM2
Beneath thy ling'ring lightN2
While sallow Autumn fills thy lap with leavesO2
Or Winter yelling thro' the troublous airP2
Affrights thy shrinking trainP
And rudely rends thy robesQ2
So long sure found beneath the sylvan shedH
Shall Fancy Friendship Science rose lipp'd HealthR2
Thy gentlest influence ownS2
And hymn thy fav'rite nameT2
