IA
-
Of all the flowers rising nowB
Thou only saw'st the headC
Of that unopen'd drop of snowD
I placed beside thy bedC
-
In all the blooms that blow so fastE
Thou hast no further partF
Save those the hour I saw thee lastE
I laid above thy heartF
-
Two snowdrops for our boy and girlG
A primrose blown for meH
Wreathed with one often play'd with curlG
From each bright head for theeH
-
And so I graced thee for thy graveI
And made these tokens fastE
With that old silver heart I gaveI
My first gift and my lastE
-

-
I dream'd her babe upon her breastJ
Here she might lie and calmly restJ
Her happy eyes on that far hillK
That backs the landscape fresh and stillK
-
I hoped her thoughts would thrid the boughsL
Where careless birds on love carouseL
And gaze those apple blossoms throughM
To revel in the boundless blueM
-
But now her faculty of sightN
Is elder sister to the lightN
And travels free and unconfinedO
Through dense and rare through form and mindO
-
Or else her life to be completeP
Hath found new channels full and meetP
Then O what eyes are leaning o'erQ
If fairer than they were beforeR
