Rhyme Scheme: A B CCDD EEFF GGHH IJKK LLMM FFNO CCPP

From Arthur Selwyn's Note bookA
-
Only A BoxB
-
-
Only a box secure and strongC
Rough and wooden and six feet longC
Lying here in the drizzling rainD
Waiting to take the up bound trainD
-
-
-
Only its owner just insideE
Cold and livid and glassy eyedE
Little to him if the train be lateF
Nothing has he to do but waitF
-
Only an open grave somewhereG
Heady to close when he gets thereG
Turfs and grasses and flowerets sweetH
Ready to press him 'neath their feetH
-
Only a band of friends at homeI
Waiting to see the traveller comeJ
Naught he will tell of distant landsK
He cannot even press their handsK
-
He has no stories weird and brightL
He has no gifts for a child's delightL
He did not come with anythingM
He had not even himself to bringM
-
Yet they will softly him awaitF
And he will move about in stateF
They will give him when he appearsN
Love and pity and tender tearsO
-
Only a box secure and strongC
Rough and wooden and six feet longC
Angels guide that soulless breastP
Into a long and peaceful restP
