From Arthur Selwyn's Note bookA
-
At The Summit Of The Washington MonumentB
-
Look North A white clad city fillsC
This valley to its sloping hillsC
Here gleams the modest house of whiteD
The statesman's longed for dizzy heightD
Beyond a pledge of love to oneE
Who in two lands was Freedom's sonE
The holder of an endless debtF
Our nation's brother LafayetteF
But yonder lines of costly homesG
And bristling spires and swelling domesG
And far away the spreading farmsH
Where thrift displays substantial charmsH
And hamlets creeping out of sightD
And cities full of wealth and mightD
Must own the fatherhood of himI
Whose glory Time can never dimI
All who can reckon Freedom's worthJ
Would write across this whole broad earthJ
With pen dipped in the golden sunE
The magic name of WashingtonE
If we can keep the rules he gaveK
This land he more than fought to saveK
Our future fame will glisten forthL
Grand as the winter lighted NorthL

Look South where in its coat of grayM
The broad Potomac creeps awayM
And seeks the blue of distant skiesN
But pauses where the great chief liesN
Within his humble hallowed tombO
Amid Mount Vernon's deathless bloomO
As glides this stream great corse past theeP
First to the bay and then the seaP
So flowed thy life to rural restQ
Ere thou wast Heaven's eternal guestQ
Oh strong high man whose patriot heartR
Climbed from all common greeds apartR
To whom men's selfish ways were smallS
As from this tower serenely tallS
Built that all years thy fame may knowT
Men look while creeping there belowT
How weak was power to thy clear gazeU
Builder of nations joined in oneE
Kindler of splendors still to blazeU
Finder of glories just begunE
Live on great sleeper as this stoneV
Highest from earth that man has knownV
So shall be ranked thy solid worthJ
Highest of heroes on the earthJ
Happy secure and cherished nameW
Love is the pillar of thy fameW
Thy praise comes from each patriot's mouthX
Warm as the sunbeams of the SouthX

Look East The Nation's castle wallsY
Spread out in massive beauty nowZ
Their lofty dome and pictured hallsY
In homage to this summit bowZ
Oh well that from these palaced landsA2
The marble spire obeisance winB2
But for the one for whom it standsA2
This chieftain town had never beenB2
Yon plot so full of brain and willC2
Had staid a bleak and lonely hillC2
If at five thousand dizzy feetD2
This shaft the whirling clouds could meetD2
Until our gaze for miles might beP
To the uncrowned but royal seaP
'Twere not too much of honor thenE2
To grant our crownless king of menE2
You who the Nation's laws inditeD
Look to this summit's honest whiteD
Where throned on walls that must endureF2
Pure fame entreats you to be pureF2
Until our glory be increasedG2
Like sunbeams from the dazzling EastG2
-
-
-
Look West There lie the hilly fieldsH2
Where brothers fought through days of dreadI2
Where mothers brooded o'er their deadI2
And soil the thrift of carnage yieldsH2
Where cannon roared and bullets sungJ2
Till every hillock had a tongueJ2
O Nation being and to beP
That silent blood speaks loud to theeP
God grant if e'er our guns againE2
Must tear the quivering flesh of menE2
The leaden hail storm may be pressedQ
Against some foul invader's breastQ
Against some alien tribe and zoneV
And not as then to kill our ownV
May all the fruitful strifes of peaceK2
The thrilling bonds of love increaseK2
May yonder orb in his quick changeL2
From mountain range to mountain rangeL2
From valley to rich valley o'erM2
From river shore to river shoreN2
From wave to wave may yonder sunE
One Nation count and only oneE
Until he dips his fiery crestQ
Into the ocean of the WestQ
-
-
-
Look up The phantom clouds of grayM
Grim ghosts of storm have passed awayM
The veiling of the sky is doneE
And downward shines the welcome sunE
He kindles grand and peaceful firesO2
Upon the city's domes and spiresP2
He sends his strong magnetic glowT
Through yonder moving throngs belowT
Thou art O sky serene and clearQ2
A symbol of our country hereR2
What land in all this world of painS2
This earth where millions toil in vainS2
Where famine pestilence and strifeT2
Play careless games with human lifeT2
Where Superstition clouds the soulU2
And heartless brains sad hearts controlU2
What country framed in frost or flowersO2
Can see so clear a sky as oursO2
Peace throws her mantle broad and freeP
O'er all who peaceable will beP
Plenty her sheltering flag doth waveK
O'er those who will but toil and saveK
Enlightenment each day shall riseN
For all who do not cloud their eyesN
While Liberty from every raceV2
Has made this land a refuge placeV2
Let our deep thanks forever flyW2
Far as the reaches of the skyW2

From Farmer Harrington's Note bookA
-
NOVEMBERM2
-
Went to Mount Vernon and I wouldn't have lostX2
That trip for fifteen hundred times its costY2
Those farm lands sleeping in the autumn sunE
The house HE slept in when his work was doneE
The trees he planted with his own brave handZ2
That set out Freedom's trees all o'er the landZ2
The humble tomb he lies in which like meP
Pilgrims from all the world have come to seeP
These look up in one's eyes and sadly smileA3
And preach a funeral sermon all the whileA3
Even the river boats upon their wayM
Toll bells as if he'd died that very dayM
And through it all this precept may be tracedB3
The noblest men are simplest in their tasteB3
-
I've read how grand Napoleon's tomb is madeC3
And all the surface honors to him paidC3
But I don't think the people that come thereD3
Bring any heartfelt sympathy to spareD3
While every true brained patriot night and mornE3
Thanks God for letting Washington be bornE3
-
While I was standing hat off at the tombO
A youth approached three quarters made of bloomO
And with his hat perched on his close sheared headI2
And smoking a small white cigar he saidI2
Sirrh would you kindly just enlighten meP
As to where Gawge cut down the cherry treeP
Said I Young man just please at once disgorgeF3
The fool idea of calling that man 'George '-
His body mind and soul were firmly setF
Higher no doubt than you will ever getF
He isn't the man though lying dead 'tis trueG3
When friends are near to be half named by youG3
Take off your hat and bow if you rebelH3
I'll get a cherry switch and trounce you wellI3
-
He looked at me a moment in surpriseN
And mutiny stood foremost in his eyesN
But I was quite indignant and could feelJ3
The blood of Bunker Hill all through me stealJ3
I said One minute more will be allowedK3
The fine young man took off his hat and bowedK3
-
Irreverence is the fashion nowadaysU
And shows itself in good and evil waysU
Its mission is legitimate and clearQ2
In cases where there's nothing to revereQ2
But they who use it must be judgment fixedL3
And not get reverend and unreverend mixedL3
