Foul Shots: A Clinic Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB CDAEAAAFA GHEIAJE KALMANKAOPDQRKJ

for Paul Levitt Be perpendicular to the basketA
toes avid for the lineB
-
Already this descriptionC
is perilously abstract the ballD
and basket are round the nailheadA
centered in the centerplankE
of the foul circle is roundA
and though the rumpled bodyA
isn't round it isn'tA
perpendicular You have to drawF
'an imaginary line ' as the breezyA
-
coaches say 'through your shoulders '-
Here's how to cheat rememberG
your collarbone Now the instructionsH
grow spiritual deep breathingE
relax and concentrate both aimI
for the front of the rim but miss itA
deliberately so the ball goes inJ
Ignore this part of the clinicE
-
and shoot foul shotsK
every day Teach yourself not to beA
bored by any boring one of themL
You have to love to do this and chancesM
are you don't you'd love to be goodA
at it but not by a love that drivesN
you to shoot foul shotsK
every day and the lovingly unlaunchedA
foul shots we're talking about nowO
the clinic having served to bring usP
together circle eccentricallyD
in a sky of stolid orbitsQ
as unlike as you and I areR
from the arcs those foul shotsK
leave behind when they go inJ
