Stains on the casementsA
dustmotes spiderless websA
No chairs and a man waking upB
or he's falling asleepC
-
Many first novels beginD
with the hero waking upB
which saves their authorsA
from writing well about sleepC
-
His life is the only novelE
about him MorningsA
he walks past the parkF
Tai Ch'i students practicingG
-
like slow lorisesA
A room on the second floorH
He'd dreamed of a ground floorH
room an insistent catI
-
at the door its mouth pinkJ
with wrath he couldn't salveK
and grew to hate All afternoonL
he's a cloud that can't rainM
-
There's no ordinary lifeN
in a resort town he thinksA
though he's wrong it lacesA
through the silt of touristsA
-
like worm life At duskO
the light rises in his roomP
A beautiful day all lazinessA
and surface true withoutQ
-
translation Wherever I goR
I'm at home he thinksA
smug and scared bothS
fierce as a secretT
-
ooo feet above sea levelE
The dark on its way downU
has passed him so he seemsA
to be rising after the risenV
-
light as if he were to keep watchW
while the dark sleepsA
as if he and it were eachX
other's future and childrenV
