'A surgeon of the United States' army says that on inquiring ofA
the Captain of his company he found that NINE TENTHS of the menB
had enlisted on account of some female difficulty ' Morning PaperC
-
-
Ye Yankee VolunteersD
It makes my bosom bleedE
When I your story readF
Though oft 'tis told oneG
So in both hemispheresD
The women are untrueH
And cruel in the NewH
As in the Old oneG
-
What in this companyI
Of sixty sons of MarsD
Who march 'neath Stripes and StarsD
With fife and hornJ
Nine tenths of all we seeI
Along the warlike lineK
Had but one cause to joinL
This Hope ForlornJ
-
Deserters from the realmM
Where tyrant Venus reignsD
You slipp'd her wicked chainsD
Fled and out ran herC
And now with sword and helmM
Together banded areN
Beneath the Stripe and StarN
Embroider'd bannerC
-
And is it so with allO
The warriors ranged in lineK
With lace bedizen'd fineK
And swords gold hiltedF
Yon lusty corporalP
Yon color man who gripesD
The flag of Stars and StripesD
Has each been jiltedF
-
Come each man of this lineK
The privates strong and tallO
'The pioneers and all '-
The fifer nimbleP
Lieutenant and EnsignG
Captain with epauletsD
And Blacky there who beatsD
The clanging cymbalP
-
O cymbal beating blackQ
Tell us as thou canst feelR
Was it some Lucy NealR
Who caused thy ruinG
O nimble fifing JackQ
And drummer making dinS
So deftly on the skinS
With thy rat tattooingT
-
Confess ye volunteersD
Lieutenant and EnsignG
And Captain of the lineK
As bold as RomanG
Confess ye grenadiersD
However strong and tallO
The Conqueror of you allO
Is Woman WomanG
-
No corselet is so proofU
But through it from her bowV
The shafts that she can throwW
Will pierce and rankleP
No champion e'er so toughX
But's in the struggle thrownY
And tripp'd and trodden downZ
By her slim ankleP
-
Thus always it was ruledF
And when a woman smiledF
The strong man was a childF
The sage a noodleP
Alcides was befool'dF
And silly Samson shornJ
Long long ere you were hornJ
Poor Yankee DoodleP
