Know ye the willow treeA
Whose gray leaves quiverB
Whispering gloomilyA
To yon pale riverB
Lady at even tideC
Wander not near itD
They say its branches hideC
A sad lost spiritE
-
Once to the willow treeA
A maid came fearfulF
Pale seemed her cheek to beA
Her blue eye tearfulF
Soon as she saw the treeA
Her step moved fleeterA
No one was there ah meA
No one to meet herA
-
Quick beat her heart to hearA
The far bell's chimeG
Toll from the chapel towerA
The trysting timeG
But the red sun went downH
In golden flameI
And though she looked roundJ
Yet no one cameI
-
Presently came the nightK
Sadly to greet herA
Moon in her silver lightK
Stars in their glitterA
Then sank the moon awayL
Under the billowM
Still wept the maid aloneN
There by the willowM
-
Through the long darknessO
By the stream rollingP
Hour after hour went onQ
Tolling and tollingP
Long was the darknessO
Lonely and stillyM
Shrill came the night windR
Piercing and chillyM
-
Shrill blew the morning breezeS
Biting and coldT
Bleak peers the gray dawnU
Over the woldT
Bleak over moor and streamV
Looks the grey dawnU
Gray with dishevelled hairA
Still stands the willow thereA
THE MAID IS GONEU
-
Domine DomineM
Sing we a litanyM
Sing for poor maiden hearts broken and wearyM
Domine DomineM
Sing we a litanyM
Wail we and weep we a wild MiserereM
