The play is done the curtain dropsA
Slow falling to the prompter's bellB
A moment yet the actor stopsA
And looks around to say farewellB
It is an irksome word and taskC
And when he's laughed and said his sayD
He shows as he removes the maskC
A face that's anything but gayD
-
One word ere yet the evening endsE
Let's close it with a parting rhymeF
And pledge a hand to all young friendsE
As fits the merry Christmas timeF
-
On life's wide scene you too have partsG
That Fate ere long shall bid you playD
Good night with honest gentle heartsG
A kindly greeting go alwayH
-
Goodnight I'd say the griefs the joysI
Just hinted in this mimic pageJ
The triumphs and defeats of boysI
Are but repeated in our ageJ
I'd say your woes were not less keenK
Your hopes more vain than those of menL
Your pangs or pleasures of fifteenK
At forty five played o'er againL
-
I'd say we suffer and we striveM
Not less nor more as men than boysI
With grizzled beards at forty fiveM
As erst at twelve in corduroysI
And if in time of sacred youthN
We learned at home to love and prayD
Pray Heaven that early Love and TruthN
May never wholly pass awayD
-
And in the world as in the schoolO
I'd say how fate may change and shiftP
The prize be sometimes with the foolO
The race not always to the swiftP
The strong may yield the good may fallQ
The great man be a vulgar clownR
The knave be lifted over allQ
The kind cast pitilessly downR
-
Who knows the inscrutable designS
Blessed be He who took and gaveT
Why should your mother Charles not mineS
Be weeping at her darling's graveT
-
We bow to Heaven that will'd it soI
That darkly rules the fate of allQ
That sends the respite or the blowI
That's free to give or to recallQ
-
This crowns his feast with wine and witU
Who brought him to that mirth and stateV
His betters see below him sitU
Or hunger hopeless at the gateV
Who bade the mud from Dives' wheelW
To spurn the rags of LazarusI
Come brother in that dust we'll kneelW
Confessing Heaven that ruled it thusI
-
So each shall mourn in life's advanceI
Dear hopes dear friends untimely killedX
Shall grieve for many a forfeit chanceI
And longing passion unfulfilledX
Amen whatever fate be sentY
Pray God the heart may kindly glowI
Although the head with cares be bentY
And whitened with the winter snowI
-
Come wealth or want come good or illZ
Let young and old accept their partA2
And bow before the Awful WillZ
And bear it with an honest heartA2
Who misses or who wins the prizeI
Go lose or conquer as you canB2
But if you fail or if you riseI
Be each pray God a gentlemanC2
-
A gentleman or old or youngD2
Bear kindly with my humble laysI
The sacred chorus first was sungD2
Upon the first of Christmas daysI
The shepherds heard it overheadE2
The joyful angels raised it thenL
Glory to Heaven on high it saidE2
And peace on earth to gentle menL
-
My song save this is little worthF2
I lay the weary pen asideG2
And wish you health and love and mirthF2
As fits the solemn Christmas tideG2
As fits the holy Christmas birthF2
Be this good friends our carol stillZ
Be peace on earth be peace on earthF2
To men of gentle willZ
