A Tragic Story Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAB CCCB DDDB EEEB FFFB GGGB

There lived a sage in days of yoreA
And he a handsome pigtail woreA
But wondered much and sorrowed moreA
Because it hung behind himB
-
He mused upon this curious caseC
And swore he'd change the pigtail's placeC
And have it hanging at his faceC
Not dangling there behind himB
-
Said he The mystery I've foundD
I'll turn me roundD
He turned him roundD
But still it hung behind himB
-
Then round and round and out and inE
All day the puzzled sage did spinE
In vain it mattered not a pinE
The pigtail hung behind himB
-
And right and left and round aboutF
And up and down and in and outF
He turned but still the pigtail stoutF
Hung steadily behind himB
-
And though his efforts never slackG
And though he twist and twirl and tackG
Alas still faithful to his backG
The pigtail hangs behind himB

Gwen A Cunningham: Like going down memory lane to live a bit of my elementary school days when I recited this poem at an elocution contest. I think I would have aced it now. I am glad to see that these timeless writings are still available.
