Woodspring Abbey, 1836 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBACDCDED

These walls were built by men who did a deedA
Of blood terrific conscience day by dayB
Followed where'er their shadow seemed to stayB
And still in thought they saw their victim bleedA
Before God's altar shrieking pangs succeedA
As dire upon their heart the deep sin layB
No tears of agony could wash awayB
Hence to the land's remotest limit speedA
These walls are raised in vain as vainly flowsC
Contrition's tear Earth hide them and thou SeaD
Which round the lone isle where their bones reposeC
Dost sound for ever their sad requiem beD
In fancy's ear at pensive evening's closeE
Still murmuring b MISERERE DOMINED
