Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDDCEEFFGHIIJJKKIf rich designs of sumptuous art may please | A |
Or Nature's loftier views august and old | B |
Stranger behold this spreading scene behold | B |
This amphitheatre of aged trees | A |
That solemn wave above thee and around | C |
Darken the towering hills Dost thou complain | D |
That thou shouldst cope with penury or pain | D |
Or sigh to think what pleasures might be found | C |
Amid such wide possessions Pause awhile | E |
Imagine thou dost see the sick man smile | E |
See the pale exiles that in yonder dome | F |
Safe from the wasteful storm have found a home | F |
And thank the Giver of all good that lent | G |
To the humane retired beneficent | H |
The power to bless Nor lift thy heart elate | I |
If such domains be thine but emulate | I |
The fair example and those deeds that rise | J |
Like holy incense wafted to the skies | J |
Those deeds that shall sustain the conscious soul | K |
When all this empty world hath perished like a scroll | K |
