The Harp, And Despair, Of Cowper Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHHGIIJKLJMMNO ONPQRFFR

Sweet bard whose tones great Milton might approveA
And Shakspeare from high Fancy's sphereB
Turning to the sound his earC
Bend down a look of sympathy and loveD
Oh swell the lyre againE
As if in full accord it poured an angel's strainF
But oh what means that look aghastG
Ev'n whilst it seemed in holy tranceH
On scenes of bliss above to glanceH
Was it a fiend of darkness passedG
Oh speakI
Paleness is upon his cheekI
On his brow the big drops standJ
To airy vacancyK
Points the dread silence of his eyeL
And the loved lyre it falls falls from his nerveless handJ
Come peace of mind delightful guestM
Oh come and make thy downy nestM
Once more on his sad heartN
Meek Faith a drop of comfort shedO
Sweet Hope support his aged headO
And Charity avert the burning dartN
Fruitless the prayer the night of deeper woesP
Seems o'er the head even now to closeQ
In vain the path of purity he trodR
In vain in vainF
He poured from Fancy's shell his sweetest hermit strainF
He has no hope on earth forsake him not O GodR
