The Blind Man Of Salisbury Cathedral. (from The Villager's Verse-book.) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDEFEFGGHEEHIIJJThere is a poor blind man who every day | A |
In summer sunshine or in winter's rain | B |
Duly as tolls the bell to the high fane | B |
Explores with faltering footsteps his dark way | A |
To kneel before his Maker and to hear | C |
The chaunted service pealing full and clear | D |
Ask why alone in the same spot he kneels | E |
Through the long year Oh the wide world is cold | F |
As dark to him Here he no longer feels | E |
His sad bereavement Faith and Hope uphold | F |
His heart he feels not he is poor and blind | G |
Amid the unpitying tumult of his mind | G |
As through the aisles the choral anthems roll | H |
His soul is in the choirs above the skies | E |
And songs far off of angel companies | E |
When this dim earth hath perished like a scroll | H |
Oh happy if the rich the vain the proud | I |
The plumed actors in life's motley crowd | I |
Since pride is dust and life itself a span | J |
Would learn one lesson from a poor blind man | J |
