MICHAEL ARCHANGELA
-
High on Imaus' solitary vanB
Which overlooked the kingdoms of the worldC
With stature more majestic his stern browD
In the clear light the thunder at his feetE
In his right hand the flaming sword that wavedF
O'er Eden's gate and in his left the trumpG
That on the day of doom shall sound and wakeH
Earth's myriads starting from the wormy graveI
The great archangel stood and hark his voiceJ
-
AIRK
-
It comes it comes o'er cities temples towersL
O'er mountain heights I see the deluge sweepM
Heard ye from earth the cry at that last hourN
Heard ye the tossing of the desert deepM
How dismal is its roarO
I heard the sound of multitudes no moreO
Great Lord of heaven and earth thy voice is fateP
Thou canst destroy as first thou didst createP
-
He stood and sounded the archangel's trumpG
And now a choir of seraphim drew nearQ
By Raphael led in sad and solemn strainsR
They raised their supplication to Heaven's throneS
-
CHORUST
-
O Thou whose mighty voice Let there be lightU
Dread Chaos heard when the great sun from nightU
Burst forth and demon shadows fled awayV
And the green earth sprang beautiful to dayV
Oh merciful in judgment hear our prayerK
Behold the world which Thou hast made so fairK
And man the mourner man the sinner spareK
-
GABRIEL RECITATIVEI
-
Oh what a change have sin and sorrow madeW
In the beginning God created heavenX
And earth and man amid the works of GodY
Majestic stood his noblest creature formedZ
In God's own image and his fair abodeA2
Was visited by seraph shapes of lightU
And sin and death were notB2
-
TRIOC2
-
Mourn mourn ye bowersL
Of paradise ye pleasant hills and woodsD2
Mourn for the dreadful voice hath passed that shrunkE2
Your streams and withered all your blooming flowersL
And thou created in God's image manB
Go forth into the nether world for dustF2
Thou art and unto dust shalt thou returnG2
-
RECITATIVEI
-
So led by Sin and Death and his pale troopH2
Impatient came and all this goodly sceneI2
As at the withering of a demon's curse was blastedJ2
Then they two went forth from whomK2
Their children sorrow and sin and death derivedL2
They two went forth into the forlorn worldC
Heart struck but not despairingM2
From that hourN
Death's shadow walks on earth a hideous formN2
Saddening the very sun and giant crimesO2
Have multiplied till to the throne of GodY
And the serene air of untroubled blissP2
The noise of violence and the cries of bloodJ2
Have from the ground ascendedJ2
Therefore GodY
Me hath commissioned to uplift the trumpG
Of doom and sweep this world of sin awayV
