Southampton Water Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDDCEFFEGHIJJIKK

Smooth went our boat upon the summer seasA
Leaving for so it seemed the world behindB
Its sounds of mingled uproar we reclinedB
Upon the sunny deck heard but the breezeA
That o'er us whispering passed or idly playedC
With the lithe flag aloft A woodland sceneD
On either side drew its slope line of greenD
And hung the water's shining edge with shadeC
Above the woods Netley thy ruins paleE
Peered as we passed and Vecta's azure hueF
Beyond the misty castle met our viewF
Where in mid channel hung the scarce seen sailE
So all was calm and sunshine as we wentG
Cheerily o'er the briny elementH
Oh were this little boat to us the worldI
As thus we wandered far from sounds of careJ
Circled by friends and gentle maidens fairJ
Whilst morning airs the waving pennant curledI
How sweet were life's long voyage till in peaceK
We gained that haven still where all things ceaseK
