Sonnet: July 18th 1787 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDECFGGFHH

O Time who know'st a lenient hand to layA
Softest on sorrow's wound and slowly thenceB
Lulling to sad repose the weary senseB
The faint pang stealest unperceived awayA
On thee I rest my only hope at lastC
And think when thou hast dried the bitter tearD
That flows in vain o'er all my soul held dearE
I may look back on every sorrow pastC
And meet life's peaceful evening with a smile mdashF
As some lone bird at day's departing hourG
Sings in the sunbeam of the transient showerG
Forgetful though its wings are wet the while mdashF
Yet ah how much must that poor heart endureH
Which hopes from thee and thee alone a cureH
