Sonnet: At Dover Cliffs, July 20th 1787 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBCDEEFGHHGII| On these white cliffs that calm above the flood | A |
| Uplift their shadowing heads and at their feet | B |
| Scarce hear the surge that has for ages beat | B |
| Sure many a lonely wanderer has stood | C |
| And whilst the lifted murmur met his ear | D |
| And o'er the distant billows the still eve | E |
| Sailed slow has thought of all his heart must leave | E |
| Tomorrow of the friends he loved most dear | F |
| Of social scenes from which he wept to part | G |
| But if like me he knew how fruitless all | H |
| The thoughts that would full fain the past recall | H |
| Soon would he quell the risings of his heart | G |
| And brave the wild winds and unhearing tide | I |
| The world his country and his God his guide | I |
